Hack that Phone: In the news.

I began to receive press coverage by many tech media sites the day that several of us from the #iphone IRC channel at irc.osx86.hu brainstormed the step by step instructions for how to put custom ring tones onto the iPhone. This was the single most significant modification to be performed on the iPhone at that time. The traffic at my site went crazy for the next couple days after I posted the first detailed instructions on how to do this.

The next milestone for the iPhone community was the iAsign program, which allowed for any SIM on the AT&T network (Cingular, and many refillable SIMs) to work on the iPhone without restriction. This was created by the iPhone Dev Team. I posted the first guide on how to perform this process. Next, GeoHot released the method for a hardware unlock. This required disassembly of the iPhone. Again I created a highly-detailed, photo-documented tutorial for this. Then the iPhone Dev Team released the most amazing method for unlocking the iPhone: the AnySIM program. It was still somewhat complicated in how to get the program onto the iPhone, and I once again created a guide for this. These original guides can be viewed in the "Nostalgic tutorials" section. The rest is history. It's been a blast running this site. I couldn't have done it at all without the amazing talent of so many individuals and the iPhone Dev Team.

I've since been interviewed by BBC Radio and the Wall Street Journal to discuss unlocking efforts, and why people wanted this to happen. Occassionally a new article comes out and mentions this site in a blurb somewhere, and I enjoy collecting these articles and reposting them. This page probably isn't interesting to anyone but me, since this is more of an I love me wall than anything else, but hey, it's my site...

I was interviewed via phone by technology reporter Iain Mackenzie on September 3, 2007. The interviewed centered around unlocking efforts and why this was important. Also discussed were Apple's and AT&T's stance on unlocking the iPhone. I've been hoping to get a link to the article or any radio excerpts, but to date have not.
