Rock Your Phone (an App Store, Cydia, Installer alternative)
intel Mac
Updated: March 13, 2009
Rock Your Phone is the latest third party program distribution system to join the ranks of the App Store,
Cydia, and the Installer. It has a few programs available now. It has trial versions (10 days) for
its programs. It uses a desktop client to install its own iPhone application onto your iPhone. You
can use either program to manage your purchases, and it will sync your programs between your computer
and your iPhone.
You can learn more at the
Rock Your Phone
website. You will need to create an account (no credit card needed) before you can download the desktop
client software and install it on your iPhone. They use Paypal, and major credit cards, to charge
for the applications you buy. You can purchase programs with your iPhone, the desktop client or
through their website.
I installed this on a jailbroken and unlocked 2G iPhone and all went smoothly. The process only took
about five minutes. I also installed this program on an unactivated and unjailbroken iPhone and it
worked just fine. Keep in mind, doing it this way leaves you with no way to install Cydia or the
Installer!
Warning: This program is kinda buggy, and some are having issues where they are having to fully
restore their iPhone to get it back to operating condition! Remember this is beta software.
Step 1.
Go to
Rock Your Phone
and download the desktop client software. You should now have this icon on your desktop. Double click
it to install it.
Be warned, this is beta software! I've already heard of incompatabilities with SBSettings from Cydia,
and some other rumblings. I'm sure this program will get better with time. When it has finished
installing, click the Close button.
Step 2.
Plug your iPhone into your Mac (you may need to use a USB hub for it to work due to issues
with OS X 10.5.6). If iTunes launches, drag it out of the way. Then go to your Applications
folder, and launch Rock Your Phone. You may be prompted to update the program.
You will then see this. Note the red orb next to the iPhone, indicating the Rock Your Phone
software has not been installed.
If you are currently jailbroken, you will get this message "You've already soft-unocked your iPhone."
Please do not get confused here. Soft-unlock (for whatever ridiculous reason) is what Rock Your
Phone terms jailbreaking. This program does NOT unlock your iPhone, nor must you be unlocked to use
this program.
Note: If you are not currently jailbroken, you will get a different set of instructions
that I will not present here. I personally think you would be doing yourself an injustice to
not already have Cydia and the Installer on your iPhone, which Rock Your Phone will not install.
Click the Install button.
It will begin uploading the software to your iPhone.
After about thirty seconds the iPhone will reboot and you'll see the recovery mode graphic (or
your custom recovery mode graphic).
It will then perform updates.
The iPhone will then reboot again. You'll also see the recovery mode graphic on the iPhone again.
Followed by a Rock Your Phone graphic.
When it has finished, click the Done button.
You should now see a green orb next to your iPhone indicating the Rock Your Phone software is installed.
I am not going to cover how to use the actual program, the creator's website contains any help you
will need at this point.
Step 3.
You should see the Rock program on your iPhone, launch it. The interface should look familiar...
