Firmware download links

Updated: July 25, 2011

How do I find these links on Apple's servers? Simple. Go to http://itunes.com/version    You will see an XML file displayed. Perform a search in your browser for the upcoming firmware version (if you know it, i.e. 4.0), then keep clicking next until you find a file name with the word iPhone (NOT iPod) in it, the firmware number, and the numbers 1,2 (for 3G iPhones), 2,1 (for 3GS iPhones), or 3,1 (for iPhone 4). Paste that URL into your browser and you are good to go. I would never download a firmware file from anyone else but Apple. Remember, iOS 4 firmware was not released for the first generation of the iPhone.

Firmware update 1.1.1

On September 27, 2007, Apple released 1.1.1 firmware, also referred to as 3A109a. It included numerous improvements. Many were surprised when Apple said this update may damage iPhones that have been hacked or unlocked. They had to say that from a legal standpoint. It wasn't stated to be a threat. It is not outside the boundaries of logic for a manufacturer to offically deny support for a modified product when it breaks due to no fault of their own. This updated caused many to have to repair their baseband if they used the first version of the AnySIM program as it destructively modified the iPhone's software.
