The graphics directory

Updated: August 22, 2010

This list may not be correct for 4.2.1 firmware and later.

This list is a starting point for anyone who wants to customize or "theme" their iPhone. By following some basic steps, all you need to do to replace a graphic is to first know its location, and second to upload a new file, with the same name, in the same format, and usually the same dimensions, to the same location. This list of graphics is but a mere handful of the thousands of graphics on the iPhone.

You can use the images on this page, on your iPhone. The graphics are in the proper .png format, and are the correct size. Make sure you name the files you download from this page, to the same thing I have listed in the path. Some of my graphics on this page will have incorrect names (should you download them). Most of them are just called icon.png. I generally do not have time to verify the path to every one of these graphics every time a new firmware comes out, so double check your work.

There are two versions of each graphic below. The larger graphic is specifically for the iPhone 4.

iPhone 4 graphics are twice the size of non-iPhone 4 graphics. For example a 59 x 60 application icon is 118 x 120. iPhone 4 graphics also have an @2x designation that appears just before the .png extension for example icon@2x.png. It's important to note that if the iPhone 4 needs a graphic and one doesn't exist with an @2x designator, it will default to the non-iPhone 4 version of that same graphic if one exists. When the iPhone 4 does this it upscales the graphic. The graphic may appear fuzzy or have other visible artifacts as it is not meant to be viewed at a higher resolution.

Attention

The files shown on this page can be installed onto the iPhone via SSH and an FTP client. If you have not installed OpenSSH, or used YummyFTP before, then read this tutorial.

While you can replace the graphics directly on the iPhone, you should rename your original files so that you can undo any changes before you make them. Do not email me asking to send you a graphic because you made a mistake. I won't do it. The preferred method of switching out graphics would be to use the program WinterBoard. You can learn about WinterBoard here.
