Using the iPhone 4 with Simple Mobile

Step 4.

Just so you know I have not figured out how to get MMS fully functional. I can send and receive texts, I can send photographs, but I can not receive photographs. I have tried numerous "solutions" out there and none have worked. Many people that use the T-Mobile network have this same issue. I've seen many comment that they do receive photographs hours after they were originally sent. If I find a solution I will post it. Currently I receive the same message most everyone else does when a photograph is sent to the iPhone: "No subject. The media content was not included due to a picture resolution or message size restriction."

There is a thread over at ModMyi where some have claimed success with MMS by following other directions. Their method did not work for me. You can read this thread here.

Step 5.

In order to get FaceTime to work you need to purchase a program called MiTime. This is for sale through a third party for $7.99. I purchased this program on my own (three times for both of my T-Mobile powered iPhone 4s and now for Simple Mobile), and can verify that it does work. You can read about this program at the developer's site here. Make sure to check out the installation instructions page for more info.

The first thing you need to do is ensure your iPhone with the unsupported SIM installed can receive an international text message. Go to this site, enter the international version of your U.S. phone number (i.e. +1 (123) 456-7890), choose where you want the message sent from, enter the security code and click the Send SMS button.

You'll should receive a text message. If you don't you can attempt to continue with this process and it may still work (it did with my Simple Mobile SIM). Launch Cydia, press Manage, press Sources, press Edit, press Add, enter cydia.pushfix.info and press Add source. The source's information will be downloaded. Press the return to Cydia button and you'll see Pushfix.info in the Entered by User section. Press the Done button. Press Pushfix.info to browse the contents of this repository.

Press MiTime. Press Install. Finish installing the program.

Press the home button and you'll see MiTime. Launch it. You don't need to press anything at this point. Just wait a few seconds and it will collect information on your iPhone.

Press the Test button. Press OK. I've erased my phone number from these screens. Yours should be here.

Press OK. I received the message that my iPhone was compatible. A purchase code was displayed.

Go to the purchase page for this program here. Enter your code in the box and click the Verify & Purchase button. After entering your code you'll be required to use PayPal and pay $7.99.

Press home on the iPhone and relaunch MiTime. It will collect information and then you should receive the message that the FaceTime token is being installed or that the FaceTime activation is in progress. The iPhone will respring. Launch MiTime again to verify that FaceTime is activated. Note it says that the FaceTime activation is on file and restoring the firmware is ok.

Make a FaceTime call! Here's my T-Mobile iPhone 4 calling my Simple Mobile iPhone 4.

Notes after installation. This is from the developer's website. If you turn off FaceTime, or it gets turned off somehow, don't turn it on in by launching Settings and going to the Phone menu. Launch the MiTime program and it will fix FaceTime and turn it back on. If you ever see a warning message about your carrier charging you for video calls again, press Cancel and launch MiTime to determine what is happening.

Step 6.

If you haven't been paying attention you'll see that your carrier logo doesn't fit and scrolls back and forth sometimes or has ... at the end of it. If you'd like to have a nicer looking carrier logo, then download the Cydia program MakeItMine.

Launch the program once it is installed. If you just want a better text logo then enter SimpleMobile (it won't fit with a space between the words and you'll have the same problem you do now), press the Carrier button and press the Respring button. There's the new text logo.

If you'd like to place a graphic there then you can try the ones I made here, or make your own. Then copy the files to the iPhone at /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/Unknown.bundle   The files must be named Default_CARRIER_Simple Mobile@2x.png and FSO_CARRIER_Simple Mobile@2x.png   If you don't know how to use OpenSSH to accomplish this, then read this tutorial.

iPhone

Launch MakeItMine and this time enter Simple Mobile@2x, then press the Carrier button (and you'll see the image load), then press the Respring button.

Here's the graphic on black and on white. I think I nailed the font that the carrier uses. It's called Gils Sans MT.
