Recommended applications to install with Cydia
Note: Before you start installing everything under the Sun on your iPhone, you might want to read
this article by "Big Boss" first:
"iPhone Slower Than Before?"
Remember that the iPhone has limited processing power, memory, and battery capacity. Some programs
that "hook" SpringBoard", and other add-on programs (daemons) can be more harmful than others in
this regard.
Backgrounder - Allows for the operation of programs in the background, while another program is
open at the same time. Normally, Apple does not allow more than one program to run at a time. If you
are running an IRC client or an IM client, you would normally have to close the program to do something
else on the iPhone. Not any more! You can set almost any program you want to run in the background,
and enjoy multitasking on your iPhone. This program does not install an icon on the SpringBoard.
Categories - Have too many icons on your iPhone? Do you wish you could group them into folders so
you can find things quicker? Now you can.
Clippy (Beta) - Adds cut and paste functionality to the iPhone. This program does not
install an icon on the SpringBoard.
Cycorder - A video recorder offering real-time video compression with audio.
CyDelete - Let's you delete applications installed by Cydia, the same way you delete App
Store applications. It will put an X on App Store applications, but it will not delete them.
MxTube - Allows for the downloading of YouTube videos to your iPhone for playback later.
You can also offload the videos from your iPhone to your computer using SSH.
OpenSSH - Is the most critical program to hacking the iPhone. It allows for secure Wi-Fi
access between the iPhone and your Mac. This allows for transferring of files to and from, and for
installation and removal of programs. You will also need an SSH client on your Mac (unless you choose
to use the Terminal). I have a detailed tutorial for how to install this program on both the iPhone and
your Mac. When you install SSH, you should also change the well-known passwords for the root and
mobile accounts.
You can read this tutorial here.
Rename - Allows you to rename App Store or jailbroken applications as they appear on your
home screen. This has been updated to work on 2.2.1 firmware. You must manually add the
source into Cydia: http://cy.sosiphone.com/
SBSettings - Short for SpringBoard Settings. Quickly manage your 3G, EDGE, Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth, SSH connections, Airplane mode, and even adjust your screen brightness from just
one control panel. It is even has themes. It also has a control panel for hiding the various
program icons installed. There are also extras like enabling a numeric version of the battery,
and automatic disabling of Apple's application kill switch.
Snapture - Is a full-featured camera application that allows you to use a self-timer, burst mode
photography, image resizing, digital zoom, and various color modes. This program has both a free
version (with ads) and a paid version which removes the ads and includes more features.
SwapTunes - Allows one iPhone to sync with two iTunes libraries on different computers.
Great if you have a work computer with one library and a home computer with a different library.
This is strictly for music, videos and podcasts.
UstreamBroadcaster - You can live broadcast video and audio from your iPhone and others
can watch you online. When you login to the Ustream website you can see your previous broadcasts.
VOIPover3G - Allows programs like fring, Skype, and SlingPlayer Mobile to function over
the 3G network, even though Apple and AT&T forbid this. This program does not
install an icon on the SpringBoard.
WinterBoard - The best way to theme the look of your iPhone. The sky is the limit with this
program. Why have the same boring looking icons and black background on your iPhone when you can have
this?
Click here for my WinterBoard tutorials.
xGPS - Turn by turn directions for the 3G iPhone.

Recommended applications to install with the App Store
AirSharing - Okay, I'm only going to recommend one application from the App Store (and it was
free the last time I checked). There simply is no better program for viewing .xls, .doc, .rtf, .txt,
et cetera, than this program, I think. It works over your Wi-Fi connection so you don't have to go
mucking around with SSH to get your files onto the iPhone.
